Cannabis Amnesty
Weed is legal. Why were people locked up for cannabis offences?
An estimated 500,000 Canadians still had criminal records for cannabis-related offences with an overrepresentation in racialized and Indigenous communities. These charges can shut people out from employment opportunities, travel, access to loans and even custody of their children. For every pardon granted through Cannabis Amnesty’s Pardon Clinic, there are $250 in legal administration fees. At 2022’s KIND Cannabis Golf Invitational, Sister Merci will sponsored a hole to fundraise for these clinics, one $250 pardon at a time.
Our tattoos weren’t permanent, and cannabis charges shouldn’t be either.
We worked with a local tattoo artist to create a flash sheet of temporary tattoos and took donations of any amount. The tattoos were meant to serve as a reminder that cannabis charges should disappear as well. It was a massive success and we fundraised SIX pardons with our activation.
